Sharknado 2/ 3: San Diego Comic-Con projections

Sharknado is a made-for-tv schlock-disaster film about a cyclone that sucks sharks out of the ocean to become a terrible shark-tornado that ravages various locales. The movie has re-curing stars Tara Reid and Ian Ziering. I remember the regular morning at the office where we were going over Syfy Original Movies, and we decided to send the Sharknado packaging out of house since our bandwidth was full and I was already working on another original film. The projections I worked on for the Comic-Con party was for Sharknado 2: The Second One and Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!

Some shots of the Sharknado projections at ComicCon. The projections made the pool realistically look like there were sharks swimming in it!

Process

There were various elements to these projections that needed to be nailed down: constraints, dynamics, and rigging. Once these were all setup, the sharks were animated in a figure-8 seamless loop with the dark vignettes acting as almost “non-projected/non-lit’ areas.

Motion-tests of the sharks swimming in a loop and interacting with the Sharknado 3 logo.

Like any experiential project, it’s critical to make sure the specs of the projection are clear from the start. We double and triple-checked everything to avoid any surprises down the road and to make sure everything was going to work.

It’s always nice to hear a compliment. Especially when you’re not fishing for it!
