23 and Me – Meet your Genes

For 23 & Me’s series of commercial spots promoting their app, I created the photo-realistic graphic spots highlighting the various UI and use-cases for 23 & Me. It was a fun project that I enjoyed working on.

Details
  • Production Studio: MPC
  • Producer: Anna Kratsov
  • Creative Director: Rupert Creswell
  • Role: Designer/ Animator
  • Additional Animators: Tony Ricciardi, Adam Rozanski

These were a series of amusing spots where each highlighted separate genes in the ‘Meet your Genes’ campaign. Credit to the production team for coming up with such a fun brief and I enjoyed working with MPC on this.

Process Stills

I iterated a series of lighting since the client was very specific about getting the right ‘whiteness’ in the spot. Different establishing shots were also explored as well as using the Gene graphics to animate from the white background and through the box, most of these shots were left on the cutting room floor in favor of a more simplified treatment.

Process Stills

Photorealism and lighting were paramount for this spot. I referenced the lighting used in the set and did what I could to make sure the renders would look as realistic as possible. If you look at C, the inset top-right box is the photoref and the larger box is the render. Careful attention was place on making sure the UI would remain consistent, I reviewed the app and animated the UI from the provided UI assets accordingly.

More A/B comparisons of the photo-reference vs the renders. Some projects require graphical stylism and others require photorealism. I enjoy working to make things photoreal when required.

Compositing + Lighting

This wasn’t just a 3D render straight from Octane – render passes are critical in bringing things across the line to make things look great. The UI was also put together and animated in AE, which was then comped onto the screens in a procedural way so that the UI could be updated without having to re-render the 3D. Work smarter not harder!

Final Notes

This was a fun project and I enjoyed working on across all aspects of the graphics – lighting, texturting, animation, and comping both in C4D and AE. With that said, I am in awe of the footage and it was an honor to work with MPC on this one.
